We come together and move our bodies to seasonal and childhood songs and rhymes during circle time. Circle is followed by a simple seasonal story, often accompanied by puppets. Circle and story builds the foundation for early literacy skills. Children are exposed to complex words and phrases in circle and play simple number games. During story they hear a beginning, middle, and end and begin to understand sequencing. After circle and story, children will have the opportunity to play on our nature playground. (This picture is from a fall puppet play about a mouse, a spider, and a pumpkin house).
Children can explore and investigate freely on our playground nestled on the edge of the forest while being supervised with a 6:1 child to teacher ratio. There are piles of wood chips, boulders, fallen down trees, and stumps to climb. There are paths to walk and adventures to create. We have a fantastic tunnel and hill and a huge sandbox. Our chickens and goats are nearby so children get to see the animals as well!
During our inside time, children have the opportunity to set the table, which sets the foundation for early math skills. Children help count how many napkins, silverware, cups, and plates are needed. They learn 1 to 1 correspondence while matching 1 of each item to each person's seat at the table. The children are valuable members of our classroom community helping out by clearing their dishes, folding napkins, and pickup up toys.
